One of the first things the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have done when they arrived in India, was to pay their respects at one of the sites of the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks.

Prince William and his wife, the former Kate Middleton, started their first royal tour in more than two years, with a one week visit in India. When they reached the hotel, they were greeted with garlands of roses by the employees.

“In memory of those who lost their lives and those injured in the senseless atrocities at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.”, the couple wrote in the visitor’s book at the hotel.

On Sunday, the royal couple visited the local cricket academy. William, in shirt-sleeves and dark glasses, was the first who started to play cricket. Kate joined as well, which gave them the opportunity to mingle with the cricket enthusiasts.

The afternoon continued with a visit to three Mumbai nongovernmental organizations, where they met volunteers working with children and poor people. They also did a tour of Mumbai in an open-top bus.

At the end of the first day in India, the royal couple went to a charity ball at the Taj Mahal Palace hotel.

During their visit to India, William and Kate will meet in New Delhi with Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. Then they will visit Assam state’s Kaziranga National Park, where there are two thirds of the entire population of Indian one-horned rhinos.

Also, at the invitation of the Himalayan kingdom’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema, the royal couple will visit Bhutan.

The tour will end back in India, where William and Kate will visit the Taj Mahal, retracing the steps of a visit made by Princess Diana, William’s mother, in 1992.
